Lancia wanted to enter the Safari for the first time, and this is what Cesare Fiorio said about their plans:
Every nut and bolt has to be flown to Africa; and the cars entered are ready for scrap after the event.
But from the publicity point of view the East African Safari is second to the Monte, and more important than the RAC.

Fiorio decided that standard 130bhp engines would be best for the Safari cars, but that still left plenty of other preparation work to be done.

All the usual Safari precautions had to be taken, the suspension being raised, and hand grips, mudflaps and protective bars were installed on the three factory Lancias.

The cars were accompanied by six service cars, 12 mechanics and a single helicopter for Fiorio’s use.
